Sea lion bites crewman
PETERSBURG-AK (2007-05-15) A sea lion bit a crewmember on a fishing boat at Petersburg Fisheries dock early Saturday afternoon (5/12). The boat had been off-loading halibut when the large animal lunged out of the water and bit into the mans upper hip. The crewman is recovering after treatment at the hospital. Reports of such attacks are pretty rare, but the incident has prompted safety concerns in the community. Federal fisheries enforcement and biologists are discussing their options for dealing with the animal.

Scientists, Students Study Space Storms in THEMIS Project
I found this article, and thought it was cool that they mentioned Petersurg: http://www.pbs.org/newshour/bb/science/jan-june07/themis_05-16.html
High school students and teachers in Alaska are helping NASA scientists collect data for a mission that aims to learn more about the space weather that causes the aurora borealis, or northern lights.

The Norweigen consultate notes that, “The inhabitants of Petersburg, Alaska celebrates the Norwegian Constitution Day for the 49th time this year. The festival runs from 17th to 20th of May.” Check out what Norway had to say about the annual festival.

New Site
I have finally updated the site with a fresh new look. I know it’s taken way too long for me to get this done. However, it is now time. I really needed to get something up to help support the upcoming 1987, 1988 and 1999 reunion. You should see some regular content updates and enhancements on this site.

The chat system has been fixed. I’ve archived the old chat logs, and I can bring them back on request. I will be camping out on the chat site, so say hi if you want. I might not be there, but I’ll probably be logged on.

We’re making some much-needed changes to the web site. A new navigation scheme has been put in place, that is more consistent and should be a little easier to use.
The chat system is temporarily down due the installation of a new firewall. This should be back online soon.
A new discussion forum has been put in place. It is database driven, and is much more reliable than old Front Page web board.
We plan to put up a new database-driven email directory soon. The current directory is messed up.

Petersburg, Alaska
July 2nd - 7th, 2000

PETERSBURG SCHOOL DAYS
“Reunion 2000″ will be the perfect 4th of July millennium experience.
It is time to dust off the old high school sweaters etc. and get ready for Petersburg’s biggest reunion ever. Rain or shine Petersburg will be the place to be during the week of the 4th of July 2000.
The committee is planning a Dance, Blind Slough picnic, individual class or group parties, breakfast, school tour, etc. A highlight of the week will be a good old fashioned Petersburg 4th of July. We plan to march in the parade and have a reunion float too. There will be a loop (5 mile) run (walk) for those so inclined. Or you can just hang out downtown enjoying the camaraderie of friends and acquaintances of the past.
Registration begins on July 2nd with events planned for July 3rd - July 7th. The large group parties, the Dance and the Blind Slough Barbecue are planned for later in the week. This is to accommodate the fishermen who most likely will be fishing Sunday - Tuesday. Of course you can always come early and stay as long as you like.
Travel arrangements may be made through Viking Travel in Petersburg at 800-327-2571. “Reunion 2000″ rates will be available. You can also book your hotel, fishing trip, kayaking adventure or glacier sight seeing flight through Viking Travel.
If you have lost or didn’t receive the reply postcard, just let us know you are coming & if you’d like to buy a tee shirt and what size. Drop a note to Reunion 2000 at Box 1068 Petersburg or e-mail jlellis@alaska.net.
We are working on a PHS Reunion 2000 booklet in which we want to list all our classmates. We would like a current photo and a little info on what you have been doing for the past 45 to 30 years. If you haven’t already done so please send the info to Jean Ellis at jlellis@alaska.net or mail to P.O. Box 1068 Petersburg, AK 99833.
